Sights and Sounds of Ripon 16th March 2019

Save the date so you don’t miss this free family-friendly day full of activities for all ages.

This is the 8th year of Sights and Sounds of Ripon which involves partners from the Public, Private and Voluntary Sector and aims to give Ripon residents a chance to connect with their city, and to enjoy all the sights and sounds Ripon offers in a fun, free and fabulous day.

The event is growing year by year and is now a popular event in everyone’s calendar.  More local groups are getting involved and they all work hard to put on an exciting programme of events and activities.

The Ripon Workhouse Museum, the Prison & Police Museum and the Courthouse Museum, Ripon Cathedral, Ripon Library, Ripon Town Hall and the Market Square are the main venues to see and engage with all the action. All will host activities, events and information stalls .

Ripon Cathedral will ring out their bells from 10.45am to signal the beginning of the event, which will be officially opened at the Ripon Workhouse Museum by The Mayor of Ripon, accompanied by the Ripon Hornblower at 11am.

Call at all the venues and meet a wide range of local groups and charities and take part in the many fun activities and events. 

Here is an outline of all the venues and events:

Ripon Workhouse Museum & Garden open 11am - 4pm. FREE entry.  Displays by Community First Yorkshire/Ex-Forces Support North Yorkshire stand with North Yorkshire Sport, North Yorkshire Horizons, Harrogate Borough Council tenant involvement.  Art activities, Victorian games and pop-up cafe.

Ripon Prison & Police Museum open 11am-4pm. FREE entry. Finger printing activity and an opportunity to handle some of the museum objects in our Hands-on History activity. Secrets in the Cellar exhibition.

Ripon Courthouse Museum open 11am-4pm. FREE entry.  Stolen Things exhibition. Meet the artist of Stolen Things, Paul Rooney. (see timetable).

Ripon Library Open 10am - 2pm. Free entry. Try Oculus Go and Oculus Rift headsets.  Family story time and art activities (see timetable).

Ripon Town Hall and Market Square -  On the Market Square you can meet the local emergency services, including: Fire Service at 11.30-12.30pm with their car-cutting exercise, Police, Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Community Resilience and OS Medical.  Visit the Town Hall for the Silverware talks to find out about the historic silverware (see timetable).

Ripon Cathedral Start your Sights & Sounds weekend with Son et Lumiere, 7.30pm Friday 15th March.  The stunning interior of Ripon Cathedral will be transformed with video projections and a spectacular light show set to live music, soundscapes and readings.  The theme is Time & Space.  Tickets £10 from the cathedral.  The cathedral will host bell ringing, 'Homeless not Faceless' exhibition, a Brickworks Lego workshop, pop-up cafe run by the Walled Garden, tower tour, displays by the local community and voluntary organisations - see leaflet for the full timetable and list of voluntary organisations.
