Workhouse Folk: Tunes from the Trenches

1 September 2018

Join squeezebox maestro John Kirkpatrick when he presents a full kitbag of songs from the two World Wars.

Enjoy popular hits of the day - designed to keep the spirits high, raise a smile, share a chorus, provide a moment’s respite from the horrors on every side, and give people the heart to keep going - in addition, however, threaded through these selections, John will also give an airing to some of the songs sung on the Front Line by the service personnel themselves – tunes that were on everyone’s lips but wedded to new words, conjured up far from home by an army of ordinary folk doing their best to be good soldiers. You’ll hear how experiences on the front were dealt with and described with great directness, wit, robust humour, and, occasionally, very fruity language! One of the most prominent figures on the English Folk Scene for many years John has performed and recorded extensively both as a soloist and as a member of duos, groups and bands. He is also regarded as a particularly fine exponent of the button accordion, the Anglo concertina and the melodeon.

There will be a Bar on the night
