Hello – I’m Milosz and I am responsible for keeping this blog up to date with what the volunteers do in the garden.

I have been volunteering at Ripon Workhouse Museum since August 2023.

Through my interest in computers and programming, I have utilised my skills and knowledge to improve the garden page of the Workhouse Museum website. I have really enjoyed interacting with the gardeners and expanding my social skills to create this volunteer blog as documentation of the changes happening inside the garden.

Please read to find out more about the plants growing in the garden and the work done by the gardening volunteer team.

Hazelwood is used in the garden for bean poles and pea sticks.

Grows on a 4 year cycle, half is cut to make use as poles.

Leeks are grown from seed in spring and planted out in late summer. Harvested throughout winter.

We are sowing sweet pea seeds. Today we have Cupani seeds which were first grown in Great Britain in 1699 and produce maroon and purple flowers. We are also sowing Matucana sweet peas which are an old variety originating from Peru.

Today we grow our own pea sticks. The Hazel plants around the edge of the garden are trimmed each year.

Their branches are utilised to support climbing pea plants. Only the tall straight ones are used for beans.
