This pear originated in Hessle near Hull in 1827 but it is certainly much older than its first recorded date. Hessle was also known as the Hazel pear – there’s a Hazel Pear pub in Cheshire where it was grown commercially for the Liverpool market. It is a very hardy and reliable pear.
